Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a Ghanaian lawyer and activist, has provoked a heated discussion by criticizing the president-elect’s proposals to name 60 ministers to the next cabinet.

In an analysis of the data, Barker-Vormawor wrote on Facebook that unless extreme measures, such doing away with the position of Regional Ministers, were taken into consideration, it would be impossible to achieve a lean government, which was one of the main campaign pledges of the president-elect.

According to him, 38 slots would already be filled by the appointment of 19 Cabinet Ministers and their deputies. Six jobs would remain to meet the proposed ministerial limit if 16 Regional Ministers were added to the total, which would bring it to 54.

“My bold idea is that the President-elect must eliminate Regional Ministers entirely. We can do without them. That is the only way his idea for a lean government will work,” Barker-Vormawor declared, his words sparking widespread discussion. Barker-Vormawor said.

This recommendation draws attention to Ghana’s continuous battle to strike a balance between political commitments and effective government.

The size of government has long been a controversial topic.

The 2017 government, in particular, appointed 110 ministers, a move that sparked popular indignation and was generally viewed as a waste of national resources. Previous administrations were criticized for having unreasonably big cabinets.

Despite claims that these appointments were required to fulfill campaign pledges, their usefulness was eclipsed by the impression of political favoritism.

The conventional governance structure is called into question by Barker-Vormawor’s plan to do away with Regional Ministers.
