The 77th anniversary of the tragic Christianborg Crossroads Shooting Incident, which was crucial to Ghana’s fight for independence, will be commemorated on Friday, February 28, 2025.
In 1948, three former soldiers, Sergeant Cornelius Adjetey, Corporal Patrick Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, were shot and killed by British colonial forces when they marched peacefully to the Christianborg Castle, which was the seat of government at the time, to voice their complaints.
Gunfire erupted at the intersection leading to the castle as the former service members, who had served for the British during World War II, demanded their unpaid war benefits.
The Gold Coast saw massive rioting and disturbances after their deaths, which accelerated the movement for independence.
The sacrifices made by these national heroes will be honored, as will the contributions of all Ghanaian veterans who gave their lives in defense of their homeland.
Government representatives, military personnel, traditional leaders, and veterans are anticipated to attend the wreath-laying ceremony in Accra’s Nationalism Park.
The legacy of Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Lamptey endures as a testament to bravery, patriotism, and the struggle for freedom and justice as Ghana considers this momentous occasion.
