President John Mahama continued in his tour of West African nations in an effort to further Ghana’s long-standing good neighbor policy.
To meet with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, he traveled to Niamey, Niger, on Sunday.
The two leaders met behind closed doors before holding a larger bilateral discussion at the presidential palace with their delegations.
Discussions centered on improving and unhindered trade between the two nations, bolstering bilateral connections, and enhancing security cooperation in the Sahel and West African region to combat terrorism, according to a statement released following the meetings.
President Mahama emphasized the need for increased cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which not only threatens the Sahel region but also nations farther down towards the coast. President Tchiani also brought up the necessity for cooperation and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to recognize the Alliance of Sahel States.
