A 28-year-old driver named Samuel Issah Abdulai has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court after being arrested for fraud on his wedding day.
Under the guise of obtaining visas for three complainants, Abdulai is accused of collecting GH₵352,000 from them but failing to do so.
The accused pledged to obtain electronic visas for Albania, Georgia, Malaysia, and Mongolia.
Abdulai has entered a not guilty plea to three charges of forgery and defrauding under false pretenses.
The accused has been granted GH₵150,000 bail with three sureties, one of which must be justified, by the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.
The court ordered the accused to appear before the police once every two weeks.
According to the prosecution, which was headed by Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, the complainants were Accra-based traders Ohenewa Sarah and Matilda Ayaaba as well as a businesswoman named Aisha Ahamed.
According to Chief Inspector Danku, Abdulai lives in the Ashanti Region’s Nkawie.
According to the prosecution, between September and December 2024, the accused and his accomplice Antwi placed flyers online asking people who might be interested in working in Belarus, Andora, Albania, and Malaysia.
The accused allegedly claimed to be in Belarus at the time, according to the prosecution.
According to the court, the accused later got in touch with the three complainants on separate occasions and persuaded them that he could assist them in obtaining different visas to the aforementioned nations.
Abdulai then sought and received GH₵47,000 from the first complainant, Sarah Ohemewa, GH₵55,000 from the second, Matilda Ayaaba, and GH₵250,000 from the third, Aisha Ahmed, who allegedly collected money from eleven other people, according to the prosecution.
Abdulai went into hiding, according to the prosecution, after receiving the money through his Momo number, which had his identity.
In December 2024, Abdulai “surfaced and sent some documents he claims were electronic visas to the complainants via WhatsApp,” according to the court.
According to the prosecution, the complainant feared foul play and began searching for the defendants.
According to the court, Abdulai was arrested during his wedding ceremony in Nkawei, Ashanti Region, by the complainants and other individuals who were thought to be the accused’s victims. He was then turned over to the police in Teshie.
“Further checks on the electronic visas at the Immigration DFEC Unit revealed that all the visas were fake,” t he prosecution said.
