Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, met with Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, to discuss areas of shared interest and strengthen cooperation on social protection, gender equality, and climate action.

The relationship between gender and climate change was the main topic of discussion. Both sides agreed that gender-responsive climate measures are necessary and acknowledged that women and girls are disproportionately impacted by environmental issues.

The minister outlined several legislative and policy initiatives that the ministry is presently pursuing during the meeting.

These consist of the Social Protection Bill, the updated National Gender Policy, and the revision to the Domestic Violence Act. It is anticipated that all of these will be presented to Parliament.

In order to create an inclusive society that defends the rights of women, children, and vulnerable groups, she underlined the importance of these legislative tools.

In addition, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey discussed intentions to submit legislation to give the Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) a legal framework in order to ensure its sustainability and raise the nutritional value of the meals that are provided to students.

Canada’s commitment to collaborating with Ghana on projects that empower women in communities impacted by climate change and promote climate-smart livelihoods was reiterated by the High Commissioner.

Both leaders reaffirmed the significance of working together to prevent gender-based and domestic violence, guarantee children’s access to high-quality education and nutrition, and set up structures that uphold equality, dignity, and inclusion.
