The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has chosen private attorney Bernard Bediako Baidoo as its parliamentary candidate in the Akwatia by-election.

On Monday, August 4, 2025, Mr. Baidoo, who is also the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akwatia, received 380 votes in the primaries.

He defeated his close opponent, Erasmus Ali Korney, who received 366 votes, and Henry Yiadom Boakye, a former MP and 2024 parliamentary candidate whom he had previously represented in court as a lawyer, who received 226 votes.

Nine hundred and seventy-five of the 1,075 eligible voters cast ballots, while three were rejected.

After Mr. Baidoo wins, he will face Solomon Asumadu, the highly regarded candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in what is anticipated to be a hotly contested election.

Following the passing of current Member of Parliament Ernest Kumi on July 7 following a brief illness, the Electoral Commission has set the date of the by-election for September 2.
