John Dramani Mahama, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said that his ministers and other officials won’t be eligible for ex-gratia if he wins the 2024 elections.

The former president promised not to make the same mistakes the NPP government did in his acceptance address following his selection as the NDC’s flagbearer.

He pledged not to enlarge the size of his administration.

In order to protect the public purse, Mr. Mahama stated in a speech at the University for Development Studies in Tamale that his future administration will have less than 60 ministries.

“Ladies and gentlemen, our country is still in a precarious position due to debilitating debt and a wasteful and ineffective administration. We can’t go on down this road. Maintaining the status quo when the effects make the people poorer is a betrayal of the people as a leader.

“I pledge to run a successful administration with no more than sixty (60) ministers. These Ministers and other government appointees will not be eligible for ex-gratia payments following their terms in office because they have agreed to this obligation even before the required constitutional modifications, which include a review of the contentious Article 71.

In March 2023, at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Cedi auditorium in Ho in the Volta Region, Mr. Mahama announced his intention to appoint no more than sixty ministries and deputies should he win the 2024 presidential election.
