A 14-member Governing Board for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been established by Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, in his capacity as Caretaker Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

He tasked the members with the vital responsibility of promoting sustainable development and safeguarding Ghana’s environment.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Buah called the inauguration “a significant step in our collective commitment to safeguard Ghana’s environment, advance sustainable development, and contribute to the Government’s vision of a greener, cleaner, and more prosperous nation.”

He listed the Board’s primary duties, which include advising on policy issues, upholding environmental laws, and supervising to guarantee that no significant project goes forward without a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

He emphasized, “The EIA process is not a bureaucratic obstacle but a shield to protect our water bodies, forests, biodiversity, and the health of our citizens.”

Speaking about new opportunities, the Minister called on the Board to take the lead in developing Ghana’s blue economy, bolstering efforts to build climate resilience, and stepping up the battle against illegal mining, or galamsey, which continues to devastate forests, rivers, and farmlands.

Additionally, he urged the EPA to increase its visibility around the country and make itself more publicly accessible.

“Your presence must be felt. As you expand, there will be human resource and resource mobilization needs, but I have no doubt the Board will handle this strategically,” he said.

Hon. Buah urged the members to serve with honesty and vision, stressing that the ultimate objective is to guarantee that environmental preservation and economic prosperity coexist for the benefit of future generations.

Dr. Christine Amoako-Nuama, the recently appointed Board Chairperson, thanked the members on their behalf for their trust.

She said that the Board will use its knowledge to help EPA fulfill its goal.
