The Ghana Police Service has been asked by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to detain and punish those who are accused of attacking its national chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, and other party officials.

This took place at Wenchi, in the Eastern Region, during the week-long celebration of the late Ernest Kumi.

When Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), and his entourage entered the Wenchi Durbar grounds to pay respects and offer condolences to the family of the deceased former MP, what had begun as a solemn observance on Friday, August 29, nearly descended into chaos.

Some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and visibly irate ladies tried to physically attack the NDC chairman and his security team.

The party issued a statement, signed by Godwin Ako Gunn, the Deputy Communication Officer, giving the police till Monday, September 1, 2025, to take action.

The NDC warned that if nothing is done, the party will be forced to capture the criminals and turn them over to the police by Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The party claims that even though the party was properly invited with a gold-plated card, the attackers, who numbered around 20 and were clearly seen in videos that were going viral, blocked their parliamentary candidate from entering the funeral grounds.

National, regional, and constituency executives, members of parliament, and other representatives were part of the trip, which was headed by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the NDC.

The widow of the late Ernest Kumi allegedly broke down in tears after seeing what the NDC called “a distasteful act” at her husband’s funeral, an incident that it blamed on members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The statement said, “The police cannot be seen to act swiftly against the NDC in some cases, only to drag their feet when it involves the NPP. We demand swift action, else we may have incidents to deal with on or before the day of the election.”
