A 20-year-old interior decorator named Pearl Agbomadzi has been officially charged by the Accra High Court with the murder of John Scott Hughes, a 74-year-old British national who lived in Ghana.
According to reports, the incident happened after Hughes and Agbomadzi met at American House and then went to Philipo’s Movie House, a popular location in East Legon, where Hughes rented a room.
The prosecution claims that Hughes, who is identified as Ms. Agbomadzi’s boyfriend, invited her to watch explicit material with him, which resulted in a mutually agreeable intimate encounter.
But according to reports, Hughes passed out and collapsed in the middle of the activity, so Agbomadzi asked the hotel staff for assistance.
After the staff called the police, Hughes was taken to Legon Hospital and subsequently declared deceased.
Hughes’ wife is the complainant in this case, and the investigation has since included her statement.
John Baptist Ayedze, Ms. Agbomadzi’s attorney, requested bail, which significantly changed the course of the court proceedings.
Presiding Judge Lydia Osei Marfo granted bail at GHS100,000 with a surety after prosecution’s assistant state attorney Frederick Adu Gyamfi did not object to the application.
Judge Marfo cautioned older men about intimate relationships, especially with younger women, in her closing remarks. She pointed out that there could be health risks because of the large age gap.
