The death of 45-year-old farmer Azumah Zakari has plunged the peaceful agricultural hamlet of Nyanoa in the Eastern Region’s Upper West Akim District into sadness.
Azumah passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 5, 2025, following a brutal altercation over a plot of property, according to police reports.
According to eyewitnesses, two suspected land guards, Kobby Asaa and his accomplice, Red, are accused of shooting the farmer in the left leg.
Currently on the run, the pair is well-known in the community for their brutal land guard operations.
Azumah tragically bled heavily following the shooting, and since there was no quick way to get him from his farm to the closest medical facility, he was declared dead when he arrived at the Asamankese Government Hospital.
The accused are known in the community for intimidating and harassing locals over property disputes, and they are thought to have close relations to Osabarima Opoku Okyere II, the Chief of Nyanoa.
Since then, officers from the Asamankese Divisional Command and Nyanoa Divisional Command have visited the crime scene to start their investigations.
Residents and the public are being urged by the police to provide reliable information that could result in Red and Kobby Asaa’s arrest.
Adwoa Augustina, the distraught widow of the deceased farmer, has made a strong plea for justice to the authorities.
In an interview, she sobbed, “My husband went to the farm to work and never returned alive. I am begging the police to ensure that those who killed him are arrested and punished.”
As investigations proceed, Azumah Zakari’s body has subsequently been placed in the morgue of the Asamankese Government Hospital for preservation and autopsy.
