A 41-year-old ward assistant named Patience Mbaye has appeared in court in Accra about a purported Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment scam.
Under the guise of obtaining their enlistment in the GAF, Mbaye is accused of collecting GH¢675,000 from 26 individuals.
The prosecutor, Inspector Frank Morgan Dorvi, informed the court that Mbaye reportedly collaborated with the currently at-large former Senior Warrant Officer Jeffrey Naboung.
Naboung allegedly took GH¢1,005,000 from 47 people under the same pretence, according to the prosecution.
Together, the two are accused of three charges of defrauding by false pretences and conspiracy to commit crime.
Mbaye entered a not guilty plea. She was granted GH¢100,000 in bail by the court with three legitimate sureties, one of whom had to be a public official.
Additionally, she was required to report to the case investigator on Wednesdays and Fridays.
The lawsuit has been postponed until July 27, 2026.
According to the prosecution, the complainants were Abdul Malik Ali, an okada rider, and Fatima Adam, a prison guard.
It stated that between 2023 and 2024, Ali contacted Mbaye, who purportedly informed him that she had connections to help the GAF recruit interested individuals.
Ali later told his sister, according to the prosecution, and Fatima also expressed interest after learning about the purported recruitment opportunity.
It stated that Fatima called Mbaye to confirm the arrangement’s legitimacy.
According to the prosecution, Mbaye told Fatima that she and Naboung had helped a number of people enlist in the military.
The prosecution said that Mbaye ordered Ali to deposit GH¢25,000 into a bank account that Naboung had given him.
Through their GCB Bank accounts, Mbaye and Naboung allegedly received GH¢675,000 and GH¢1,005,000, respectively, from those looking to join the GAF.
The prosecution claimed that despite the complainants’ pleas, the money was not returned and that the two were unable to obtain the promised recruitment.
The police were then notified of the incident so they could look into it.
