The Ministry of Roads and Highways has been given a week to fix the crumbling Pokuase–Nsawam road or face a statewide protest, according to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other commercial transport operators.
The operators claim that the road is in such poor condition that it is practically impassable, putting drivers, commuters, and locals at risk.
They warned that the situation is increasing operating expenses because of more frequent vehicle maintenance, shorter vehicle lifespans, and more spare part replacements in a statement released on Thursday, August 14.
“This is not just a challenge for commercial transport operators but for all motorists using this critical corridor to Eastern, Ashanti, and other northern regions,” part of the statement read.
“It is disrupting daily life and economic activities.”
The group claims that a recent meeting with the Minister of Roads and Highways concluded with a commitment to repair the road in six weeks, but that period has passed with no discernible improvement.
According to the operators, “If no meaningful action is taken within one week, the GPRTU of TUC, GRTCC and other commercial transport operators will park our vehicles and embark on a protest against the government till our concerns are addressed.” They are urging the ministry to give the repairs top priority.
They also urged all impacted drivers, commuters, and locals to participate in the demonstration, calling it a civic obligation to force the government to take action.
