The Ghana Police Service has made a major breakthrough in the investigation into the alleged murder of Accra-based medical doctor Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife, Elizabeth Esi Amuah, following the arrest of a key suspect believed to have worked as their errand boy.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Abraham Awondok, reportedly fled Ghana after the couple’s disappearance and travelled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where he went into hiding.
Awondok was later arrested and deported from Dubai to Ghana to assist with the ongoing murder investigation.
According to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, the suspect has allegedly admitted during interrogation to killing Dr Jesse Amuah and his wife.
The couple were reported missing in March 2026 and their remains were subsequently discovered in April 2026, after police investigations intensified.
Police Investigate Disappearance of Accra Couple
Speaking at a police press briefing on Monday, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohunu said investigations initially focused on the couple’s disappearance after they were reported missing.
The couple had reportedly not been seen or heard from since March 23, 2026. A complaint was subsequently filed with the Police Missing Persons Unit on April 22, after their residence was found locked.
Their Nissan Sunny vehicle, with registration number GX 159-X, was also reported missing.
Police searches were conducted at the couple’s residence, locations they were believed to have visited and other areas based on information provided by family members.
The search eventually led to the recovery of the couple’s remains, which were conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Errand Boy Identified as Murder Suspect
The IGP said subsequent investigations established that Abraham Awondok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, was allegedly responsible for their deaths.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly took the couple’s mobile phones, money and private vehicle before leaving Ghana for the United Arab Emirates.
Following his departure, the suspect was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice, which facilitated efforts to locate and apprehend him outside Ghana.
On August 30, 2026, Awondok was deported from Dubai to Ghana by investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
Suspect Admits to Murder During Interrogation
The IGP disclosed that the suspect admitted during police interrogation after his return to Ghana that he had murdered Dr Jesse Amuah and Elizabeth Esi Amuah.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, while police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged double murder.
The couple’s missing vehicle has also been recovered as part of the ongoing police investigation.
Police Appeal for Information
The Ghana Police Service says the arrest forms part of broader efforts to dismantle criminal networks and tackle violent crime across the country.
IGP Christian Tetteh Yohunu has appealed to members of the public to provide credible information about suspects who may still be at large.
Members of the public can report information to the nearest police station or contact the police emergency line on 191.
The IGP assured the public that information provided to the police would be treated with strict confidentiality.
