Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the head of the Ministry of the Interior, has highlighted significant advancements in Ghana’s peace and security.

Hon. Muntaka, the Minister, said in a statement at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House in Accra that the Ministry has accomplished important milestones in a number of areas, including the drastic reduction of curfews nationwide from 11 to 5, which reflects improved security and dialogue, and the return of normalcy to previously affected communities.

The Ministry has led the effort to alter the Public Holidays Act to reinstate July 1 as a national holiday and add an additional day for Eid-ul-Fitr, he continued, encouraging inclusivity and historical acknowledgment.

Hon. Muntaka revealed that in an effort to improve public access, expedite processes, and cut down on delays, the Ministry has started digitizing 16 essential tasks, including permit and license services.

He stated that this action is anticipated to enhance accountability and transparency while also offering the people better services.

“The Ministry has cleared and repatriated 2,241 street beggars to their respective countries in cooperation with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and the Ghana Immigration Service, restoring public order while supporting vulnerable populations,” he said.

To improve youth employability and enhance security agency operations, he noted, the Ministry has also inked a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Youth Development for Security Agency Internships.

Furthermore, the Ministry and the Ministry of Education will shortly sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will allow the Prisons Service to manufacture 20% of the sanitary pads used in the government’s Free Sanitary Pad program.

A 24-hour economy secretariat, ongoing anti-illegal mining operations, and significant breakthroughs in major cases are just a few of the noteworthy accomplishments the Ghana Police Service has made, the Minister added. The Service has also carried out high-impact, intelligence-led anti-robbery operations in all regions, with notable outcomes.

Speaking about prison reform, the Minister said that the Ghana Prisons Service has completed the Damongo Correctional Facility, which has increased correctional infrastructure and decreased overcrowding, and that it has also implemented juvenile and secondary education initiatives, supporting education continuity for juveniles and inmates.

Additionally, he said, the Service has started a digital literacy program to provide officers, dependents, and prisoners with digital capabilities.

Regarding the government’s anti-drug initiatives, he stated that the Narcotics Control Commission has stepped up its efforts to prevent drug trafficking and advance public health.

He continued by saying that the Commission had disrupted significant trafficking activities by seizing 192 kilograms of cocaine, 90 kg of cannabis, and 17.9 kg of gold bars.

Regarding disaster relief, he stated that the National Disaster Management Organization has improved readiness and response to disasters, safeguarding lives and livelihoods. The organization has responded to 332 emergencies, carried out field assessments, and given 11,524 disaster victims relief.

He praised the National Identification Authority for establishing Prestige Registration Services, removing 600,000 registration backlogs, and registering over 18 million Ghanaians.

He added that the Authority has improved the infrastructure for both physical and cyber security by installing security systems.

Hon. Muntaka gave the good people of Ghana the assurance that the Ministry of the Interior is still dedicated to maintaining peace and security and will keep up its diligent efforts to advance these goals and meet the requirements of the Ghanaian people.
