Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, has expressed disappointment over the slow pace of work on some road projects being executed under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme.

The Roads and Highways Minister made the remarks during an inspection tour of major road construction and rehabilitation projects across the Bono, Bono East, Savannah and Upper West Regions.

Agbodza Threatens to Terminate Delayed Road Contracts

Hon. Kwame Agbodza expressed strong dissatisfaction with the performance of some contractors working on the Big Push road projects, warning that non-performing contractors could have their contracts terminated.

During the inspection, the Minister directed contractors handling underperforming projects to attend a critical performance review meeting in Accra on Monday, where they will be required to explain delays and account for their progress.

The move forms part of efforts by the government to ensure that road contractors deliver projects within agreed timelines and improve the quality and pace of road infrastructure development in Ghana.

Road Projects Inspected in Bono and Bono East

The Minister’s inspection tour included a drive-through of the Sunyani Outer Ring Road, an important road infrastructure project expected to improve transportation and connectivity within the Sunyani area.

He subsequently inspected ongoing rehabilitation works on the Sunyani–Buoko Junction–Techiman Road and the Techiman–Nkonsia Wenchi Road.

The projects form part of broader efforts to improve road networks, enhance connectivity between communities and support economic activity across the regions.

Wenchi–Sawla and Wa–Sawla Roads Also Inspected

Hon. Agbodza also inspected ongoing construction and rehabilitation works on the Wenchi–Sawla Road and Wa–Sawla Road projects.

The inspection provided the Minister with an opportunity to assess the progress of work, identify challenges affecting construction and engage with contractors responsible for delivering the projects.

The Roads and Highways Ministry is expected to continue monitoring the implementation of projects under the Big Push programme, with greater emphasis on contractor performance, timely completion and value for money.

The Minister’s warning signals a tougher approach towards contractors whose performance does not meet the government’s expectations for Ghana’s major road construction and infrastructure projects.
