Yaw Mensah, also known as Red, is a 42-year-old driver who was found guilty of robbing a taxi and threatening the driver.

He was given a 15-year prison sentence with hard labor.

The court rendered its decision in response to accusations of robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, both of which were against the Criminal Offenses Act of 1960.

Mensah was charged with robbing a Matiz taxi, registered GB 5330-22, which was worth GHC 70,000.

The incident, according to the prosecution, was a planned attack that took place on September 6, 2023, at around 3:40 AM.

On behalf of the prosecution, Chief Inspector Teye-Okutto explained how Mensah had first hired the complainant, Ronold Adomako, a cab driver from Odorkor.

Mensah, who was in the front passenger seat when he picked him up at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, took out a pistol and threatened to shoot Adomako.

Adomako halted the car out of fear for his life, and Mensah forcibly pulled him out before taking off with the cab.

Mensah parked the stolen car at Agbogbloshie Market after the heist.

A third suspect, identified only as Mohammed, is still at large, while his accomplice, Yussif Abubakar, also known as Abacha, was later taken into custody.

In response to intelligence, authorities arrested Abubakar near Agbogbloshie on September 8, 2023, and seized the stolen car.

Abubakar implicated Mensah and the missing Mohammed during interrogation, which prompted officials to seek for Mensah.

During police interrogations, both of the accused acknowledged their involvement in the crime and disclosed that they had prearranged the robbery.

Following the incident, Adomako immediately called the police to report the heist, which sparked an extensive investigation.

Further investigations are underway after authorities established that the suspects had been connected to multiple other robberies in the Greater Accra Region.

Abubakar, Mensah’s co-accused, was cleared and removed from the case, but Mensah received a heavy punishment.

Mohammed, the third suspect, is still being sought in order to prosecute him.

The court’s ruling emphasizes the grave repercussions of armed robbery and the continuous efforts of law enforcement to counteract the area’s escalating crime rates.
