The Electoral Commission (EC) has formally declared that a Parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the untimely death of Hon. Mahama Naser Toure, the sitting Member of Parliament.

In a press release dated January 16, 2026, the Commission stated that the legislator’s death had left the Ayawaso East seat vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended.

As a result, the EC is constitutionally required to hold a by-election to select a new Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Mr Samuel Tettey, the Electoral Commission’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, signed the news release.

The EC declared that it will accept nominations from potential lawmakers at the Commission’s Ayawaso East Municipal Office in North Ridge.

Submissions will be accepted every day from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm during the nomination period, which will run from Monday, February 9, 2026, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

The formal Nomination Forms must be downloaded by interested candidates from the Electoral Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh/forms).

The forms can be downloaded between Friday, January 16, 2026, and Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

On the designated dates and times, a potential candidate may deliver the completed forms to the Returning Officer at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office in person or via the Proposer or Seconder.

The EC states that a candidate’s written permission to the nomination must be attached to their nomination form.

Additionally, two registered voters in the constituency—one serving as the proposer and the other as the seconder—must witness the forms, and eighteen (18) more registered voters in the Ayawaso East Constituency must sign them to support the nomination.

At the time of filing their nomination, candidates must additionally provide two (2) copies of a recent postcard-sized (bust-size) photo that was taken against a red background and clearly displays their entire face and ears.

Each completed nomination form needs to be sent in four copies.

Ten thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000.00) each candidate is the filing fee set by the EC for the by-election.

Nonetheless, the Commission declared that female candidates and people with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a lower filing price of seven thousand five hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢7,500.00) in accordance with its inclusive principles.

To guarantee a seamless and transparent election process, the Electoral Commission urged all political parties, potential candidates, and the general public to pay attention to the recommendations and follow them.
