Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Attah, Minister for Roads and Highways, has asked the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to conduct a thorough inquiry into claims of corruption in the awarding of road contracts.
The request comes in response to charges of corruption in connection with the awarding of road contracts, which Prof. Stephen Adei made public in a recent interview with TV3, a Ghanaian commercial television station.
Prof. Adei asserted in the interview, which aired on Friday, October 20, 2023, that applicants for road contracts are required to make a GH1 million up-front payment.
“These allegations are surprising, given that the processes leading to the award of road contracts are open, transparent, competitive, and in accordance with the law,” the Ministry of Roads and Highways said in a statement.
“The Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Attah, Minister of Roads and Highways, took swift action in response to the seriousness of the claims. He formally asked the Economic and Organized Crime Office’s Executive Director to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged wrongdoing today, on October 23, 2023.
The ministry’s commitment to openness and accountability was reaffirmed in the statement, which said, “Given that the alleged conduct appears to constitute the commission of a crime against the Republic, we are actively collaborating with EOCO. We will offer all assistance required to enable a complete and unbiased examination.
The Ministry promised that the charges will be thoroughly and objectively investigated in close coordination with EOCO.
The Ministry appeals to the general public to have faith in the investigation process and assures the populace that any wrongdoing that is proven will be punished in accordance with the law.
