Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, the former minister for gender, children, and social protection, has filed a libel suit against her ex-husband, prominent attorney Tony Lithur.
The action is based on slanderous remarks made by Mr. Lithur on May 2, 2018, during their divorce proceedings.
On April 14, 1991, Nana Oye and Tony Lithur tied the knot in a customary manner. In January 1998, they changed their marriage status to an ordinance marriage.
The world learned of their marital issues when Mr. Lithur filed for divorce in 2018.
Nana Oye claims that false and defamatory assertions in the divorce petition were maliciously publicized. As a result, she is requesting USD 500,000 in general damages and USD $1 million in exemplary damages.
Nana Oye was purportedly portrayed by Mr. Lithur in an unprintable manner in his divorce suit and reply dated July 9, 2018.
Additionally, he implied that she was misusing public funds by claiming that she was a corrupt official who planned to buy an investment property in South Africa for between $350,000 and $500,000.
According to Nana Oye, these accusations caused serious damage to her reputation because they were extensively circulated through a variety of media outlets.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) launched an inquiry into potential corruption, money laundering, and unlawful property acquisition in South Africa as a result of the claims.
After being granted bail, Nana Oye was forced to provide a legal defense for herself.
Nana Oye angrily refuted every accusation, claiming that Mr. Lithur’s words were deliberately misleading and meant to harm her standing.
She said that she experienced public mockery, animosity, controversy, and disdain as a result of these false claims.
The outcry forced the former minister to resign from her position as a lecturer at a postsecondary school and endure a barrage of insults and humiliation.
“I have been seriously injured in my reputation and shunned, embarrassing questions and humiliating treatments from different people, including strangers, associates, friends, family members, foreigners, some members of the international community, international acquaintances, and colleague professionals.” she stated.
In addition to other remedy, Nana Oye is requesting a perpetual injunction to stop Mr. Lithur from saying or publishing any further defamatory things.
Additionally, she is requesting that Mr. Lithur retract his statements and issue an apology, which will be posted on all of his social media accounts and the Lithur, Brew & Company website.
