The Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM Bank) recorded a major improvement in its financial strength in 2025, with its capital adequacy ratio (CAR) rising to 75.3 per cent, according to the latest 2025 State Ownership Report published by the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA).

The report revealed that GEXIM Bank’s capital adequacy ratio increased significantly from 53.7 per cent in 2024 to 75.3 per cent in 2025, representing a rise of 21.6 percentage points.

The strong capital position places the state-owned development finance institution well above the applicable regulatory minimum, giving the bank a substantial financial buffer to absorb potential losses and manage financial risks.

GEXIM Bank Strengthens Financial Stability

The sharp increase in GEXIM Bank’s capital adequacy ratio highlights the bank’s improved financial stability and resilience within Ghana’s banking and development finance sector.

A strong capital adequacy ratio enables a financial institution to better withstand unexpected losses while maintaining its ability to provide credit and support economic activity.

For GEXIM Bank, the improved capital position could also create greater room to expand export financing, trade finance and business funding for companies operating in strategic sectors of Ghana’s economy.

The bank plays an important role in supporting export-oriented businesses, particularly enterprises seeking to increase production, expand into international markets and contribute to Ghana’s economic transformation.

Shareholders’ Funds Increase to GH¢2.10 Billion

The improvement in GEXIM Bank’s capital position was supported by strong growth in its shareholders’ funds.

According to the SIGA report, shareholders’ funds increased by 28.63 per cent, rising from approximately GH¢1.63 billion in 2024 to GH¢2.10 billion in 2025.

The growth was largely attributed to an increase in retained earnings and statutory reserves, strengthening the bank’s financial base.

The higher shareholders’ funds provide additional capacity for GEXIM Bank to absorb financial shocks while supporting its mandate of providing financing to businesses and sectors that are important to Ghana’s development.

Boost for Export Financing in Ghana

The stronger capital position is expected to enhance GEXIM Bank’s ability to provide financial support to exporters, businesses and strategic industries.

With greater financial capacity, the bank could potentially increase lending and other financing solutions for businesses involved in export development, manufacturing, trade and economic transformation.

The development also comes at a time when Ghana continues to pursue policies aimed at increasing non-traditional exports, supporting local businesses, improving foreign exchange earnings and promoting private-sector growth.

GEXIM Bank’s improved capital adequacy therefore represents a positive development for Ghana’s financial sector and export economy, while giving the institution a stronger foundation to fulfil its development finance mandate.
