The Ghana cedi secured its position as Africa’s fourth-strongest currency by nominal value against the US dollar in July 2026, despite experiencing fresh depreciation pressures in the foreign exchange market.
According to exchange-rate data cited by Business Insider Africa, the ranking compares African currencies based on the number of local currency units required to purchase US$1.00.
Using this exchange-rate methodology, currencies that require fewer units to buy one US dollar are considered stronger in nominal value.
The Tunisian dinar remained Africa’s strongest currency at approximately TND2.93 per US$1.00, followed by the Libyan dinar at around LYD6.38 per US dollar and the Moroccan dirham at roughly MAD9.34 per US dollar.
The Ghana cedi maintained its fourth-place ranking among the continent’s strongest currencies.
