All foreigners involved in illegal mining activities in Ghana, also known as galamsey, would be deported, according to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Speaking over the weekend to some Ghanaian community members in Lagos, Nigeria, the Minister reaffirmed President John Mahama’s unwavering commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
“It has been stated by President Mahama that no form of mining will be tolerated in our river bodies or forest reserves,” he stated.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, a military operation aimed against illicit miners is scheduled to begin in the next few days.
“In the next few days, people will be rounded up and prosecuted,” he said, indicating the seriousness of the impending clampdown.”
He further revealed that although many deportations have already occurred, little attention has been paid to these initiatives.
“A lot of deportations have already been carried out; they have just not been advertised,” he explained.
Additionally, the Minister emphasized the significance of taking tough measures against repeat offenders, especially those who return to restricted mining zones following prior activities.
He urged Ghanaians residing in Nigeria to back the national anti-illegal mining effort, promising that the government will take all necessary steps to contain the threat.
