Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, met with the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey at a high level on Friday, June 27, 2025, and reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting illegal mining.

President John Dramani Mahama ordered the meeting, which came after the Coalition filed a petition calling for more forceful action against the threat of unlawful mining.

The Coalition’s convener, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, praised the initiative and reaffirmed the Coalition’s willingness to work with and assist NAIMOS in the battle against illicit mining.

The Coalition made a number of demands during the engagement, including:

• Revocation of Legislative Instrument (L.I. 2162), deemed counterproductive to anti-galamsey efforts.

• Publication of the names of owners of seized excavators to promote transparency.

• Declaration of a state of emergency in select critical illegal mining areas.

• Prosecution of foreign nationals involved in illegal mining.
