The GRNMA, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, has reiterated that it is open to communication with the Ministry of Health.
Any revision of provisions previously agreed upon in its 2024 Collective Agreement, however, was vehemently rejected.
The announcement coincides with a statewide strike by midwives and nurses that started on June 4, 2025.
According to the GRNMA, the government has consistently failed to carry out the agreement’s stipulations, such as important incentives, allowances, and better working conditions, which has led to the industrial action.
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the recently appointed Health Minister, urged all sides to return to the negotiating table and called for constructive conversation to end the deadlock in response to the growing strike.
On Monday, June 9, however, GRNMA Greater Accra Regional Chairman Jefferson Asare resisted the idea of renegotiation in an interview with Citi FM.
“We are ready to meet. If we receive a letter now, we will move anywhere they want us to go. But for renegotiation, we are not ready,” Mr. Asare stated.
He underlined that rather than revisiting issues that have already been resolved, the association is still open to conversations on how to carry out the terms that have been agreed upon.
Asare also pointed out that nurses and midwives are the only group whose conditions of service are still unmet, underscoring the growing sense of injustice in the health sector.
“In the health ecosystem, it is not only nurses who have problems with the conditions of service. But we are the only group whose conditions of service have not been implemented,” he stated.
Outpatient and emergency services at numerous public facilities have been impacted by the ongoing strike, which has severely hampered healthcare delivery nationwide. A prompt and equitable settlement has been demanded by stakeholders, including patient advocacy groups and civil society organizations.
Instead of trying to reopen settled matters, GRNMA urges that the government act in good faith by carrying out its contractual duties.
