President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his government remains committed to providing quality, durable and sustainable road infrastructure across the country under the flagship Big Push infrastructure programme.
The President gave the assurance during an inspection of ongoing construction works on the Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road, a major transport corridor linking communities in the Upper West and Upper East Regions.
The inspection formed part of President Mahama’s #ResettingGhana Tour of the Upper West Region, which began with a focus on key infrastructure and development projects.
Mahama Explains Big Push Road Development Strategy
President Mahama acknowledged the growing demand from Ghanaians for improved roads but explained that the government could not construct every road across the country at the same time due to budgetary limitations.
He said the government had therefore adopted a phased approach through the Big Push programme, with additional phases expected to follow.
According to the President, Big Push Phase One is currently being implemented, while preparations are already underway for Big Push Phase Two and Phase Three.
Mahama explained that the government’s immediate priority is to complete major trunk roads and arterial routes that form the backbone of Ghana’s national road network.
He noted that developing these major corridors first would create a reliable transportation network and make it easier for motorists from various districts to connect to major highways.
Feeder Roads to Follow Major Trunk Roads
The President said the government would subsequently shift greater attention to feeder roads, which connect rural communities and towns to the main highway network.
He explained that the strategy would allow the government to gradually expand road infrastructure from major trunk routes into communities across the country.
The approach, he said, is intended to improve road connectivity, transportation, economic activity and access to markets while ensuring that limited public funds are used effectively.
Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo Road Project Progressing
President Mahama expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction on the Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road project, describing it as an important economic corridor for northern Ghana.
He said the project remains on schedule for completion and commissioning next year, subject to the continued pace of construction.
The President also emphasised the importance of constructing the road to a high standard to provide value for money and reduce the need for frequent maintenance.
He disclosed that after the planned double surface dressing, the road would be sealed with asphalt along the Wa-to-Bolgatanga stretch.
According to Mahama, the additional treatment is expected to significantly improve the road’s durability and extend its useful lifespan.
“The work is progressing well, and we will return next year to commission this road. I am confident that the quality of the road will be excellent,” President Mahama said.
He added that the improved road would be designed to last for about 20 years with minimal maintenance, providing long-term benefits to motorists, businesses and communities along the corridor.
Road Infrastructure Remains Key to Ghana’s Development
The Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road is expected to play an important role in improving transportation, regional connectivity and economic development between the Upper West and Upper East Regions.
Improved road infrastructure is also expected to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, goods and people while supporting businesses and communities along the route.
The inspection of the road project was the first activity on President Mahama’s schedule during his two-day tour of the Upper West Region.
The government says the phased implementation of the Big Push road projects will continue as available resources permit, with priority given to strategic roads that can deliver significant economic and social benefits to Ghanaians.
