John Dramani Mahama, the president-elect, has called on the government and security forces to act quickly to put an end to the ongoing violence following the election and the illegal takeover of public institutions.
“Because state power is still in the hands of the present administration, I call on the President and the security agencies to act decisively to curb the ongoing acts of lawlessness immediately,” he said in his Tuesday night speech to the country, citing the current administration’s continued hold on state power.
Mr. Mahama noted that changes in government frequently created the appearance of a power vacuum, which may cause some people to put their own interests above of the good of the country.
“I’ve received reports of attacks on state offices and installations. While it’s unclear who is behind these attacks, I condemn them in no uncertain terms. These acts must cease immediately.
“As I said during my post-declaration speech, I urge the youth not to vent their frustration in criminal enterprise.
“Instead, they must channel their anger and frustration into the positive enterprise of resetting and rebuilding our beloved nation,” he said.
All Ghanaians were asked by the president-elect to maintain composure and refrain from taking any acts that would jeopardize the country’s democracy and state institutions.
“We have fought hard for change, and now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding the Ghana we want through unity and understanding,” he urged.
