Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Central Region’s Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, has denied rumors about his financial background and revealed that his riches are the result of years of hard work in business.
According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, his decision to leave school in his third year at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in order to explore business prospects eventually influenced his financial success.
After finishing secondary school, the fourth-term MP recalled, he lived at home for two years before relocating to Accra to “hustle.”
He began his career as a post boy, advanced to the position of principal post officer, and in 1999 was awarded a scholarship to attend Cape Coast University.
He clarified, “In July 2001, during the Kufuor administration, we had career counselling sessions that introduced us to entrepreneurship.”
“‘That was when I made the bold decision not to return to school. My colleagues know this. I left Cape-Vas at level 300 to chase money.”
Afenyo-Markin described how he established his business empire, which consists of a chain of businesses in many industries.
He proudly said that as a tribute to his accomplishments, he still keeps his first Mercedes-Benz and BMW in his yard, which he purchased when he was young.
“I started my business early. At age 23, I got married and launched Excel Courier, a multi-million-dollar investment.” He spoke on Accra-based Joy News
Standard Chartered Bank gave me a $5 million facility, Barclays Bank also supported me, and I made significant strides in business before entering public service,” he said.
In addition to providing courier services, he disclosed that he had experience in logistics and transportation, having worked for firms like Diamond Cement and Guinness.
He revealed that he has trucks and tankers that connect Ghana, Togo, Aflao, Buipe, Ho, Ivory Coast, and Awaso.
Afenyo-Markin claimed he had no need to conceal his wealth in the face of allegations that he utilizes political vetting sessions to settle personal scores.
He underlined, “I am not one of those who buy property and register it in someone else’s name.”
“I am a landlord, not a tenant, and I am proud of my journey as a businessman,”
