Justin Kodua Frimpong, the general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has vehemently disagreed with the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling places in the Ablekuma North Constituency. Frimpong maintains that Akua Afriyie, the NPP candidate, won the 2024 election.
During a press event on Tuesday, July 8, Mr. Kodua claimed that the NPP had won the constituency handily and said that the EC had undermined popular will by calling for a rerun.
“We will not be part of any rerun in Ablekuma North,” the NPP General Secretary stated.
The Commission should act in conformity with the facts and information offered throughout the election process, Mr. Kodua said, calling the EC’s decision unfair.
A repeat of the parliamentary election was previously announced by the EC in 19 Ablekuma North polling stations, alleging anomalies in the collation process, more specifically, the lack of confirmation by some Presiding Officers on scanned results.
The NPP, however, insists that all required steps were taken and that the results at the relevant polling places were officially confirmed and signed by the party’s representatives and EC officials.
The NPP is certain that any more delay in appointing Akua Afriyie as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North would be a breach of the residents’ democratic mandate, and Mr. Kodua’s comments only serve to heighten political tensions surrounding the contested constituency.
The NPP’s demands have not yet received a formal response from the Electoral Commission.
