Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, also known as Naa Gamu, the Queen of the Ga-Adangme Muslim Union (Nungua West), was shot and killed at her enskinment ceremony in Nungua, Accra.
She was hit in the thigh by a musketry that was fired during the ceremony on Saturday. At the time of the incident, Naa Gamu and her husband were being enskinned as queen and chief of the Nungua West branch of the Ga-Adangme Muslim Union.
The family has revealed that a suspect has been arrested as investigations are ongoing, even if the motivation for the gunfire is still unknown.
The deceased’s family questions the shooting’s circumstances and suspects foul involvement.
In a TV3 interview, her uncle Martison Quaye voiced his worries about the incident and called for justice.
“In such ceremonies, is it not gunpowder that is used? And isn’t the gun supposed to be fired into the sky? Why was she shot in the thigh?”.
“We were turned away from the first facility without even first aid. At LEKMA, they also referred us to Ridge Hospital without any medical or first aid. By the time we got to Ridge, they removed the bullet and dressed her wound, only to tell us she had died.”
Her death was attributed by her brother, Nii Bortey Agbli, on a lack of prompt medical attention.
The Nungua community is in sorrow following the shooting, and many are demanding that traditional festivities be subject to more stringent security measures.
The event is still being investigated by the police.
