Shortly after Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin tragically informed the House of the unexpected death of Hon. Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, yesterday, Parliament adjourned.

Following a brief illness, Hon. Ernest Kumi was confirmed deceased early this morning.

The Minority Leader claims that Hon. Ernest Kumi’s passing has affected the Ghanaian Parliament, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus, and the Akwatia Constituency. He informed the House that last week, Hon. Ernest Kumi was observed fully engaged in his legislative duties.

Later, the Minority Leader urged the Chair, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker, to adjourn the House so that members could comfort themselves.

He reassured his colleagues, saying, “Colleagues, let’s take heart as we continue our service to mother Ghana.”

Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga commented on the heartbreaking news, calling it one of the most depressing days in Ghanaian Parliament history. He took the opportunity to offer the House’s condolences to Hon. Ernest Kumi’s immediate family.

Later, he accepted the Minority Leader’s request to adjourn the House so that public business and procedures might restart today, Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

Following a minute of silence in honor of the late Hon. Ernest Kumi, the MP for Akwatia, the House adjourned.

When the time is right, the House leadership is supposed to pay a visit to the late MP’s family and offer their condolences.
