Mahama Ayariga, the majority leader, has commended nurses and midwives for ending their statewide strike, which started on June 2, 2025.

Speaking Friday on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Ayariga, who is also the Bawku Central Member of Parliament, recognized the vital role that nurses and midwives play in the nation’s healthcare system.

According to the Majority Leader, government officials will meet with the nurses’ and midwives’ leadership once more on Thursday, June 26 to continue negotiating their terms of service.

The Majority Leader praised the nurses and midwives for their decision to halt their industrial action, as did Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, the chairperson of Parliament’s Health Committee.

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) executives and the Health Committee of Parliament met in a critical meeting at Parliament House in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

Following a four-hour discussion, the GRNMA asked to bring the government’s ideas back to their Council for consideration before making a firm decision about the next steps.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Health Minister; Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Head of Government Business in Parliament; and representatives from the Ministry of Finance and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission were among the government officials who attended Thursday’s meeting.

To emphasize their demand that the government uphold the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which was signed in May 2024 and is set to go into effect on July 1, 2024, members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) went on a nationwide strike.

In addition to fuel allowance arrears and other terms of service, the nurses and midwives demanded that the government pay their unpaid 13-month allowances and allowances for nurses working in remote regions.

However, the GRNMA rejected the government’s representatives’ offer, stating that budgetary constraints prevent it from honoring the requirements in the CBA this year.

Numerous public health institutions closed as a result of the nationwide disruption in healthcare delivery caused by the strike action, worsening the health of numerous patients and consumers.
