Despite purported attempts by the Jacobu-Odotobri NDC Chairman in the Amansie Central District to secure the release of four suspects detained for engaging in illegal mining activities within the Krobo Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region, the Ashanti South Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to prosecute them.

On Monday, May 11, 2026, the suspects were captured in the protected woodland region as part of a joint police and Logeist Group Company Limited anti-galamsey operation.

The suspects were discovered, according to the police, aggressively mining inside the reserve and operating perilously near the Oda River, which development authorities claim poses a major risk to the surrounding water bodies and the environment.

Two excavators used in the illegal mining activity were confiscated, according to security officials, and various other tools and objects discovered at the location were also destroyed during the drill.

“We found four excavators actively engaged in illegal mining within the forest reserve and operating very close to the Oda River. The Jacobu-Odotobri NDC Chairman later arrived in the vehicle of one of the illegal miners and claimed he had permitted them to enter the forest,” officials stated.

The chairman allegedly begged authorities to free the suspects, claiming that they were his associates.

Despite the purported assistance, the command insisted that the accused would be prosecuted.

Following the operation, Logeist Group Company Limited’s operations manager, Seth Kofi Adjei, spoke to the media and reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting anti-galamsey initiatives meant to safeguard the nation’s natural resources.
