Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has stated that, the Independent Examinations Committee (IEC) no longer has the legal jurisdiction to arrange entrance examinations for admission to law schools under the recently approved Legal Education Reform Law.
His remarks come after President John Dramani Mahama signed the Legal Education Reform Bill, 2025, ending the Ghana School of Law’s 66-year monopoly on professional legal education in Ghana.
On Tuesday, May 12, Mr. Dafeamekpor spoke on the JoyNews AM Show about one of the most controversial topics pertaining to legal school reform: how prospective law students take entrance exams.
According to him, the new law eliminates entrance exams for Ghanaian law schools.
He went on to say that Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2355 of 2018, which formerly gave the IEC the authority to administer exams for admission to the Ghana School of Law, is revoked under Section 90 of the legislation, which is a component of the transitional provisions.
He states that the IEC is no longer legally required to provide entrance exams because the pertinent regulations have been repealed.
Additionally, Mr. Dafeamekpor attacked people and organisations that were holding preparatory courses for aspiring law students on the grounds that entrance exams will still take place, claiming that the legislation does not allow for such exams.
He added that Section 45 of the new law now specifies admission requirements, which he claimed offers a clear foundation for admission to law schools.
He says that the Council for Legal Education and Training would oversee the admission procedure, which will now be uniform across all law schools in the nation.
Additionally, the new law permits professional legal education programs to be offered by authorised colleges. This reform has long been supported by stakeholders who contend that the former system created needless barriers to entry into the legal profession.
On Monday, May 11, 2026, President Mahama signed the legislation into law, stating that its goals are to increase access to legal education while maintaining its quality.
