Police in the Eastern South Region arrested ten persons and seized nine firearms after a series of security operations in Akwatia ahead of the by-election.

The firearms, eight pump-action guns and one locally built single-barrel gun, were seized on August 22 and 23 during snap checks and targeted raids to prevent illegal arms possession before the elections.

Police at St. Dominic Hospital apprehended Bernard Kumi Ofosu, who was in possession of a pump-action rifle and cartridges.

Despite the fact that he presented a licence, the weapon is being verified. Officers hauled up Joshua Amenuku with cartridges from Akwatia Y-Junction and then discovered another rifle at his residence.

Further investigations at Boadua Livingstone Junction resulted in the arrest of Enoch Asiedu and Chinese national Lu Youyan when ammunition was traced back to their employer, who is now wanted.

Another arrest was made at the same checkpoint: Pieterson Joseph, who was found carrying a pump-action gun and 46 cartridges.

That evening, police detained a Toyota Tundra in Staff Village, Boadua, and recovered three more pump-action firearms. Stephen Nkansah, the driver, claimed two for himself and one for his chief.
