The Ghana Police Service has launched an extensive investigation into a viral video in which an American lady, Arianna Naomi Mackey, claims she was kidnapped and robbed in Accra by individuals she claims were police officers.
According to a statement from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the video, recorded at a hotel in Accra, featured Ms Mackey alleging that “she was kidnapped by five masked men, whom she alleges were Ghana Police Service officers on snap-check duty in Accra, and robbed her of some amount of money.”
Police investigations indicated that Ms Mackey and two companions checked out of their hotel on December 5, 2025.
Airport checks also revealed that she exited the country on the same day.
Investigators say that when they reached out to Ms. Mackey to assist with the investigation, she informed them that she was not in Ghana and could not give them the names of the suspected cops or the license plate number.
She told police that she was abroad and that she was unable to obtain the identities of the suspected cops or the license plate of the car they were driving, according to the CID. A friend who Ms. Mackey claimed was with her during the event was also contacted by police, but the acquaintance “does not want to be involved in the investigation.”
Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, the CID’s public relations officer, signed the statement, which also stated that Ms. Mackey has since removed the viral video and that further attempts to get in touch with her have been unsuccessful.
The CID stated, “Efforts by the investigators to contact her through WhatsApp calls and messages have proved unsuccessful, as she has declined to respond and later blocked the team.”
The police said they are using diplomatic means to get her assistance in spite of the setback.
The Service stated that it “remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case,” emphasizing that it takes the accusations seriously.
