The US government has been praised by President John Dramani Mahama for removing the tariff it placed on Ghanaian agricultural imports.
He stated that agricultural goods like cocoa, avocado, oranges, pepper, onions, and yam were subject to tariffs. He clarified that the decision’s reversal meant that Ghanaian goods sold in the US would now be subject to no tariffs.
During his speech at the 41st Farmers Day Celebration in Ho, the Volta Region, President Mahama offered the praise.
“We don’t pay any tariff. Our current volume of trade with the US in agricultural products is about $100 million, but we can significantly raise this because of the opportunity they’re giving us,” he stated.
He advised persons involved in agriculture to review the list of Ghana’s agricultural exports to the US in order to increase their production capacity and earn more money.
President Mahama stated that because farming was profitable and increased revenue, he continued to act as a farmer while serving as president.
He urged government officials and all of his appointees to buy land and cultivate oil palm trees.
“If you do 10 or 20 acres of oil palm, you will be surprised that it will give you more money than the salary you take every year,” he remarked.
In order to supplement their income, the President urged Ghanaians to invest in agriculture and be able to produce.
