An educational forum was arranged in Worawora, Oti Region, by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to address growing complaints regarding excessive electricity bills.
Residents’ mounting dissatisfaction prompted the forum, which took place on Thursday, September 5, 2024, and eventually led them to consider staging a protest against ECG.
In addition to addressing important issues with power bills, the one-day workshop was organized by the recently established PURC Consumer Service Committee (CSC) in the area and served as a chance to introduce CSC members to the Chiefs and Worawora people. The forum was attended by representatives of ECG Volta Regional Offices, PURC – Volta/Oti, and ECG Jasikan District.
The ECG officials gave residents an explanation of the current predictive billing system and the billing method used by the company. Many homeowners feel that this system has resulted in unreasonably high rates.
A number of patrons expressed their discontent, claiming that the fees exceeded their actual usage. ECG informed the residents that the problems would be fixed after acknowledging their worries.
In response to additional worries expressed by the residents, PURC said it would set up a follow-up meeting wherein ECG meter readers would collect residents’ actual meter readings and compare them with the information in their system, guaranteeing more precise billing.
The conference was successful in reducing hostilities between ECG and Worawora residents. The residents conveyed their appreciation to PURC and ECG for their timely intervention and readiness to resolve the concerns.
The Commission reaffirmed its dedication to defending the rights of local utility service providers and customers.
