The Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana’s Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) has stated that it continues to believe that privatizing the country’s electricity distributor, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), is best for both the business and the nation.

The union also criticized “the cost of input in running the power sector, which will invariably be factored in electricity pricing” and noted that ECG was “heavily controlled and managed by politicians.”

This was announced by PUWU in a statement signed by Timothy Nyame, its general secretary, on January 13, 2025. The statement congratulated Ghana’s new president, John Dramani Mahama, and promised to work with him and his administration “to find permanent solutions to energy, housing, and water situation and at affordable cost to Ghanaians.”
