The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reminded its constituency executive committees that only the National Executive Committee has the authority to issue orders governing the party’s conduct of elections.

The warning comes in response to a number of instructions given to prospective Candidates by several Regional Executive Committees regarding how the party should handle its upcoming parliamentary primary in “orphan constituencies.”

A memo from the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, to all Regional Executive Committees of the NPP stated that the orders include, but are not limited to, the setting of tentative dates for the holding of the parliamentary primaries and the imposition of a “development levy,” among other things.

As a result, it instructed all Regional Executives to “cease forthwith, the issuance of any directives on the conduct of parliamentary primaries unless and until same have been approved by the National Executive Committee in accordance with the Consititution of the Party.” Additionally, it mandated the return of all funds collected from potential parliamentary candidates.
