Hon. Kwame Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways, has reaffirmed the government’s intention to reintroduce a technologically advanced tolling system in order to raise money for the improvement of road infrastructure.
With the audacious objective of developing “the best road tolling system in Africa,” the Minister has said that Ghana will shortly introduce its own electronic tolling system.

He emphasized the value of innovation and the government’s resolve to dispel any skepticism about the reinstatement of tolls by declaring, “We are not settling for anything less than excellence.”
During a courtesy call in Accra, Hon. Agbodza was speaking to H.E. Hüseyin Güngör, the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana.
He mentioned that in order to choose a transaction advisor, the Ministry is presently seeking permission from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA).
“Transparency is a priority, and we welcome all capable organizations to participate in the selection process. We want the best technical and financial proposal that can make us operate a very sustainable tolling system,” he stated.
“My Ministry will keep the public informed about the progress of the tolling system’s development and the selection process for the transaction advisor. In a few days, the advertisement for the selection of the transaction advisor should be out. Together, we will pave the way for a brighter future in road infrastructure,” he said
The possibility of Turkish investors funding the nation’s road infrastructure development through the government’s flagship initiative, “the Big Push,” was also discussed.

The Minister also asked Turkish engineers to share their knowledge of tolling systems and emphasized the possibility of technical collaboration between the two nations.
“We are ready to collaborate and learn from successful models, particularly those in Turkey that utilize technology instead of traditional toll booths. Our partnership could lay a strong foundation for Ghana’s new tolling system, ensuring it is both efficient and sustainable,” the Minister concluded.
