For the upcoming three months, the Army will be in charge of security at the Presidency.

Yesterday, in a colorful event that included military exercises at the Accra government seat, they replaced the Navy.

On March 7, 2025, the Navy replaced the Air Force in the rotational guard role.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghanaian Armed Forces, President John Dramani Mahama, was present during the ceremony, and his vice, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, observed it from above.

Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, the interior and defense ministers, prominent government officials, the top military brass, and students from a few basic, secondary, and university institutions were also in attendance.

The ceremonial handover of guard duty at the Presidency is symbolized by the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

The Army would be expected to transfer the duty of defending the Presidency in October, a task that is carried out every three months.

This is the second time that the guard has been changed since President Mahama took office for a second term after winning the December 2024 election.

The ceremony, a beloved military tradition, includes well-choreographed precision maneuvers with a full band.

Ghana’s change of guard ritual, which originated in the UK and was first carried out in 1689, was established on May 5, 2013.
