The Foreign Affairs Minister Declares the Launch of Chip-Embedded Passports

The introduction of Chip-Embedded Passports was announced by Hon. Samuel Okudeto Ablakwa (MP), Minister of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

During his speech, Hon. Okudeto Ablakwa (MP) said that starting Monday, April 28, 2025, the Poly Carbonate Chip-Embedded passport will take the place of the Biometric passport.

The foreign Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) has mandated the Chip-Embedded Passport, which will improve border security, lessen identity fraud, and make foreign travel easier for Ghanaians, according to Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Apart from the change in passport categories, the Honorable Minister brought to light the following:

i. 24-hour operations, in line with President Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy;

ii. Secure delivery services to enhance convenience;

iii. e-Tracking of one’s passport processing to allow citizens effectively monitor the process; and

iv. The reduction of application fees by 30% will also be implemented.

To guarantee that Ghanaians are aware of the new passport, a statewide sensitization campaign will also be launched to acquaint the public with the new passport and its improvements.
