Linda Ocloo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, has apologised following public outcry over comments implying that deployments to Ghana’s northern region could be interpreted as punishment.

The minister said that the comments, which were caught on a widely shared video, were a “genuine slip in communication” and did not represent her true opinions or the rules governing posts inside Ghana’s public service in a press release released by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC).

“My attention has been drawn to a widely circulated video in which I made remarks suggesting that postings to the northern part of our beloved country could be considered as a form of punishment,” she said.

“I wish to state, without reservation, that the comments captured in the video were a genuine slip in communication and do not reflect my considered views.”

The minister states that the remarks were made in response to a media inquiry about claims that certain technocrats who issue development licenses without following the proper procedures are frequently reposted to neighbouring areas, enabling such practices to persist.

She clarified that during her response, she mentioned situations in which certain public servants had been assigned to locations distant from their usual residences, but she admitted that her word choice had given the wrong impression.

“Regrettably, my choice of words created the unintended impression that such postings were punitive,” she said.

Mrs. Ocloo apologised unreservedly to Ghanaians, especially those from the country’s northern regions.

She said, “I sincerely acknowledge the concerns that this has generated and offer my unreserved apology to all Ghanaians, especially my brothers and sisters in the northern regions, for any misunderstanding, offence, or discomfort caused.”

The minister reiterated her dedication to due procedure, professionalism, and justice in public administration.

She reassured the public that all administrative decisions will continue to be made strictly in compliance with existing norms and regulations, including personnel postings and transfers.

Mrs. Ocloo reaffirmed her commitment to providing honest, equitable, and accountable service to the people of the Greater Accra Region and requested the public to consider the situation clarified.
