During a hearing in May 2026, the Public Accounts Committee expressed concerns about the GH¢30 monthly rent that Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School in Saltpond charges for staff housing.

Samuel Atta Mills, a ranking member, questioned school authorities about the amount of money received from the two-bedroom staff bungalows.

“How much do they pay for a bungalow at Mfantsiman in Saltpond?” he enquired.

Employees who occupy the units pay GH¢30 in rent, according to a school official.

“Saltpond is GH¢30. For the residential accommodation, we are expected to recover a total of GH¢3,666.”

“The rent is GH¢30 for two-bedroom units. It was introduced as a way of motivating staff,” the official stated.

Mr Atta Mills questioned if the sum was in line with public sector housing rules and claimed it was small given the state of the facilities.

“What you collect is not even enough to renovate the place. These bungalows are in a poor state,” he remarked.

Additionally, he enquired as to whether authorities were aware of public sector laws regarding rent deductions depending on pay percentages.

He said, “Have you heard about people paying ten percent of their salaries as rent?”

The committee is examining how public institutions handle their assets and collect revenue.
