The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has reviewed various current projects in the Ashanti Region aimed at improving the quality and safety of Kumasi’s electricity supply.

The Energy Ministry and Ghana’s Electricity Company are implementing these projects to balance the region’s power supply, particularly in Kumasi, as the “garden city” continues to see an increase in power consumption.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, the CEO of GRIDCo, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Limited, journalists, and other dignitaries joined him.

Dr. Jinapor and his entourage visited the Ridge BSP, the Kumasi Substation of GRIDCo, the Boadi to Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply sub-transmission lines, and the Aska and Cenit Plants at Anwomaso.

The group noted that the Aska facility, which presently produces roughly 130 megawatts (MW) of electricity, is in the second stage of a system overhaul.

In order to increase the region’s power supply, the CENIT Plant, a new generator plant, is still being built. When it is finished, it will generate 110MW of power.

It is anticipated to be finished by May or June of 2026 and is one of the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) projects.

They also mentioned that ECG had replaced the old 20/26 MVA transformer at the Ridge Substation in Kumasi with a new 30/39 MegaVolt-Ampere (MVA) transformer.

In order to fulfil the city’s increasing need for high-quality power, the substation’s capacity load will be increased.

The old transformer at the Ridge Substation was moved to Offinso to be placed to serve that enclave as part of an effort to enhance the region’s power supply.

According to Dr. Jinapor, the government made a conscious effort to stabilise the nation’s secure and high-quality electricity supply, especially in Kumasi, the “heartbeat” of the region’s economy.

ECG is now installing over 300 transformers in local towns to supplement the significant system enhancements in the area.

According to Dr. Jinapor, the second phase of the transformer installation project in the area will involve the installation of an additional 400 transformers.

He revealed that GRIDCo would start a significant gearbox line overhaul in July in order to increase the nation’s system reliability.

The Minister also disclosed that ECG was attempting to enhance the Volta region’s electricity supply.

In order to provide that region of the nation with a dedicated feeder to increase the capacity of all the other towns on the Eastern Corridor, he proposed building a transmission line from Asiekpe to Ho.

In order to enhance the power supply in the Mpoho districts of the Western region, about eighteen transformers will be installed by next week.

As the nation underwent significant system upgrades to stabilise the country’s power supply, Dr. Jinapor urged the public to be patient with the energy sector.

He said, “Occasionally we may have to switch some plants off or some gadgets off in order to enable the men on the field to work.”

He stated that the Energy Ministry was optimistic that the nation would have a very robust and resilient electricity supply by the end of the third quarter of 2026.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene expressed gratitude to the Energy Ministry for their efforts and commitment to enhancing the region’s quality power supply.
