The Ministry of Roads and Highways is taking initiatives to eliminate defective bitumen in road building.

In a meeting with industry stakeholders earlier today, Hon. Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, highlighted that “Government is committed to ensuring that only high-quality bitumen is used in the country’s road sector, especially with the ‘Big Push’ projects. We are determined to institute a clear policy direction and a robust regulatory oversight that guarantees durable, cost-effective road infrastructure in this country.”

“The Government is resolute in its commitment to delivering road infrastructure that provides value for money for the people of Ghana,” he stated once again.

The measures aim to enhance laws, implement licenses, update technical specifications, and track bitumen from source to site to ensure complete accountability.

In order to guarantee bitumen quality in the nation’s road construction industry, the Minister established a technical working committee.

Additionally, the Committee will offer evidence-based policy recommendations to improve bitumen management, regulations, and accreditation.

Hon. Agbodza states that the objective is to guarantee that the nation uses only high-quality bitumen, particularly for the “Big Push” projects.

The action is also intended to improve procurement transparency, encourage a sustainable and economical supply chain, and harmonize Ghanaian norms with international best practices.

The meeting’s stakeholders applauded the involvement and brought attention to important operational problems, such as the lack of efficient import regulations, the detrimental impact of black market operations, and the ongoing disparities in product standards across various suppliers.
