Dominic Buah, the secretary of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), has warned illegal miners not to fight with members of his anti-galamsey task force.

His comments coincide with authorities’ continued attempts to suppress illegal mining operations, often known as galamsey, which continue to present significant environmental and security risks throughout Ghana.

There is growing opposition to the National Anti-Illegal Mining actions Secretariat’s actions in several mining towns, which raises questions about the security of the law enforcement officers.

Colonel Buah stated that his squad will not put up with any kind of armed resistance from illegal miners during a speech at an editors’ roundtable on Wednesday, March 25.

In an indication of a more robust approach to the ongoing battle against illegal mining, he emphasised that workers are well-trained and well equipped to defend themselves if threatened.

“We will not stand and watch anyone use weapons against us. We are better trained in weapons and therefore warn that anybody who dares, NAIMOS will deal with them ruthlessly.

“It is a problem we are trying to address and we have the right to self defence and let no galamseyer miss that. If you go to the field with weapons and you try to fire it, a lot more will be at you.”
