President John Dramani Mahama has designated Friday, July 10, 2026, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions impacted by the recent floods.

The Post-Flood Mitigation Committee is organising the exercise with the goal of encouraging residents to clean up their neighbourhoods and lower the likelihood of future flooding.

“Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods” will be the topic of the event.

In a statement released on Monday, July 6, the administration announced the effort, stating that the statewide exercise was an essential intervention to save both the environment and human lives.

The President ordered all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and personally oversee cleanup efforts in their local communities. It also urged all Ghanaians to fully participate.

According to the statement, “This is a critical, nationwide exercise and all citizens are strongly encouraged to fully participate in it.”

The plan calls for the start of the exercise on Friday, July 10, by members of the security agencies, trash management firms, and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). On Saturday, July 11, the general public will join them to help scale up the cleanup.

Desilting clogged drains, sweeping and clearing sand, weeds, and debris from roads and highways, and cleaning public areas including marketplaces, truck parks, recreational parks, and shared garbage collection locations will be the main activities.

The government noted that improper garbage disposal practices had greatly contributed to flooding and characterised the exercise as both an emergency response and a demand for long-term behavioural change.

“For far too long, indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have clogged our drainage systems, contributing to devastating, preventable floods that destroy livelihoods and claim precious Ghanaian lives,” the statement read.

It further stated that all MMDAs must collaborate closely with waste management firms to supply logistics, such as waste trucks, gloves, shovels, and other cleaning equipment, while guaranteeing the prompt evacuation of all gathered silt and refuse.

In order to protect communities from future tragedies, the statement concluded with a call for national unity and shared responsibility.

“Let us rise together and show that the Ghanaian spirit of community, discipline, and unity is alive and well. Protect your home, protect your neighbour, and let us clean our beloved homeland. Clean Ghana, Save Lives,” the statement said.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President’s spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, signed it.
