Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu gave the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) instructions on Monday to begin allocating GH¢100 million annually to special needs education in 2027.
The increased funding and support are anticipated to directly impact over 9,000 students.
According to the Minister, the directive aims to improve learning circumstances for students with disabilities and develop inclusive education.
During a meeting with leaders of 39 special and integrated schools in Ghana, Iddrisu made this statement in Accra.
The choice was in line with Ghana’s larger commitment to human capital development and educational equity.
Mr. Iddrisu declared that the administration is determined to stop funding delays for food programs in special schools.
“The era of schools holding the calabash, constantly appealing for resources to feed students must come to an end,” he said.
The Minister declared that the meal grant for students in special schools will be increased to GH¢15 per student, with immediate effect.
He said that GH¢40 million had been set aside for the purchase of assistive technology to improve teaching and learning by giving students with special needs better access to educational materials.
According to Mr. Iddrisu, “this comprehensive approach signals a new chapter for special needs education within the country’s public finance framework.”
“These actions areexpected to improve the academic performance and personal development of children with disability.”
Previous data shows ongoing difficulties with special education financing, such as feeding grant disbursement delays.
All students, regardless of ability, will have access to high-quality education thanks to the new allocation, which is a deliberate attempt to overcome these previous shortcomings.
